Palliative Care Seeking Volunteers

West Burlington, Iowa, May 20, 2024 – Palliative Care-Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center is hosting an informational session on a new Patient Partner Volunteer program. The informational session will be held on Tuesday, June 18 from 2-3 p.m. in the Maple/Walnut Conference Rooms on the West Burlington campus (Lower Level).

This new Patient Partner Volunteer program aims to match volunteers with Palliative Care patients to help them navigate the healthcare system, accompanying them to medical appointments, helping them understand their plan of care, and supporting them in successfully achieving their goals of care. The Patient Partner Volunteers will help Palliative Care patients reach independence when possible.

Palliative Care patients are people of all ages managing a serious illness, such as cancer, heart or lung disease, and dementia. They are under the care of the Palliative Care team of specialists who help improve their quality of life and their families through care coordination, education, and communication.

The ideal volunteer would have a caring heart, strong organizational skills, and time available to attend medical appointments. All volunteers will work under the direction of the Palliative Care Team and receive extensive training to realize success in this role.

For more information, contact Great River Health Volunteer Services at 319-768-3340. Registration is required by Friday, June 14.
