Great River Health and the Burlington Area YMCA will celebrate
National Senior Health and Fitness Day from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, May 25.
It will begin with an 0.8-mile walk around the lake on the health system’s
campus at 10 a.m. Participants should meet on the Cafeteria Patio on the
lower level of Great River Medical Center, 1221 S. Gear Ave., West Burlington.
Balance screenings, blood pressure checks, bone density screenings and
information about Great River Health Fitness and the YMCA will be available
from 10 a.m. until noon in the Walnut Room near the Cafeteria.
Two sample exercise classes will be offered in the Walnut Room:
- Matter of Balance, 10:30 to 10:50 a.m., is an award-winning program that
helps reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels of older
adults. Great River Health Fitness will offer Matter of Balance classes soon.
- Senior Fitness, 11 to 11:30 a.m., is a low-impact cardiovascular exercise
class that incorporates strength training with dumbbells and elastic bands.
It includes stretching and chair yoga. Senior Fitness classes are offered
at the YMCA.
Healthy snacks and door prizes will be available.
