What you need to know about Hepatitis C

Hepatitis C is a common type of viral hepatitis in the United States. It is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis C virus. The virus is spread when blood from an infected person enters the body of an uninfected person. A HCV antibody test will show if you have been infected.

Who should consider this screening

  • Women should be tested during each pregnancy
  • Children born to an infected mother should be tested

About this screening

  • Many people do not know they are living with the Hepatitis C virus, as there are not always symptoms.
  • Hepatitis C can lead to liver problems, like scarring and cancer, if left untreated.
