There are many types of cancer treatment, so Great River Medical Center provides individualized care for every patient. Some patients have chemotherapy or radiation only, and others have both. Our providers work together to create the best treatment plans.

Our center also treats blood disorders including anemia, hemophilia, sickle cell disease and thalassemia.

Chemotherapy and treatment for blood disorders

Chemotherapy is the use of drugs to:

  • Kill rapidly growing cancer cells
  • Slow their growth
  • Relieve cancer symptoms

There are many types of chemotherapy drugs, and sometimes several drugs are combined. A pharmacist mixes chemotherapy IV drugs in our cancer center. The process of receiving chemotherapy through an IV is called infusion. In some cases, oral chemotherapy drugs are prescribed.

We also provide these services:

Blood-product transfusions
Chemotherapy, some types of cancer and blood disorders may affect blood counts. Some patients need transfusions of whole blood or blood components such as red cells or platelets.

Bone marrow biopsies
A bone marrow sample can confirm anemia, leukemia, and lymphoma.

Immunotherapy is the treatment of weakened immune systems caused by cancer or other diseases.
