Cancer and Blood Disorders
There are many types of cancer treatment, so Great River Medical Center
provides individualized care for every patient. Some patients have chemotherapy
or radiation only, and others have both. Our providers work together to
create the best treatment plans.
Our center also treats blood disorders including anemia, hemophilia, sickle
cell disease and thalassemia.
Chemotherapy and treatment for blood disorders
Chemotherapy is the use of drugs to:
- Kill rapidly growing cancer cells
- Slow their growth
- Relieve cancer symptoms
There are many types of chemotherapy drugs, and sometimes several drugs
are combined. A pharmacist mixes chemotherapy IV drugs in our cancer center.
The process of receiving chemotherapy through an IV is called infusion.
In some cases, oral chemotherapy drugs are prescribed.
We also provide these services:
Chemotherapy, some types of cancer and blood disorders may affect blood
counts. Some patients need transfusions of whole blood or blood components
such as red cells or platelets.
Bone marrow biopsies
A bone marrow sample can confirm anemia, leukemia, and lymphoma.
Immunotherapy is the treatment of weakened immune systems caused by cancer
or other diseases.
